Alcohol Rehab

Inside a rehab

Do You Need Alcohol Rehab?

If alcohol is causing problems in your life, then this is a sign that you need to stop this behaviour. Some people may notice that they are developing difficulties before they become physically and psychologically dependent, but the majority of individuals will have crossed this line before recognising their problem and knowing they need alcohol treatment. Denial is a major factor when it comes to alcohol addiction, and the individual can suffer a great deal before they are able to see the reality of their situation.

There are people who do seem able to break away from alcohol addiction without any help. In fact, most substances abusers will have periods where they were able to stop or show some degree of control. The real challenge of addiction is not stopping but in staying stopped. The real benefit of an alcohol rehab clinic is not that it helps the individual to stop the abuse, but that it provides them with the tools that will mean that they never feel the need to turn this type of behaviour again. This is why it can be such a good option for those who are dealing with addiction problems.

Resistance to Rehab

It is usual for those who would benefit from spending time in a rehab programme to feel resistant to the idea – at least in the beginning. The most common justifications for this resistance will include:

  • The individual feels that their problem is not serious enough to warrant a stay in rehab. This way of thinking is misguided for a number of reasons. This type of programme is there to help people of all levels of addiction and not just the most serious cases. It is also a reality that the majority of people with addiction problems grossly underestimate the seriousness of their condition.
  • The person can feel that they do not have the time for rehab; that they just have too many responsibilities. This is the same as the cancer patient claiming that they do not have time for the treatment that could save their life. Addiction is a serious business, and if the individual is unable to escape it in time, it will kill them. The individual needs to make time for addiction treatment because otherwise they will lose everything anyway.
  • The person can continue to be convinced that they will be able to deal with their problems alone. This may be true for a minority of those who fall into addiction, but if the individual keeps on trying to go it alone and keeps on failing, they really do need to consider another approach. There is an old saying – if you keep on doing the same things, the same things will keep on happening to you.
  • The person may believe that they are too far-gone or not worthy of recovery. This type of thinking can be an unfortunate outcome of long-term addiction. The problem is that as time goes by the individual will suffer from reduced self-efficacy and self-esteem.
  • The individual may say that they are unable to afford rehab at the moment. It is important to keep in mind that this treatment programme is an investment in the future, and that there are different options to suit different budgets.

Glass of alcoholThe Reality of Rehab

One way to overcome the resistance to alcohol or drug rehab is to develop a better understanding of how this can help the individual. This means learning more about the reality of this type of programme which would include things like:

  • This type of treatment options is going to provide the person with the tools they are going to need in order to build a good life free from addiction. These tools can also be used to help the person function well in society and achieve success.
  • The real goal of rehab is not just to get the person sober, but also to help them create a sober life worth living. Once the individual begins to enjoy the benefits of this new life, they will be less likely to return to the old way of doing things.
  • By entering this type of programme, the individuals will not be disempowering themselves but actually doing the opposite. They are learning how to really take charge of their own life so that they will be able to take it in the direction they want it to go.
  • These residential programmes tend to offer a very comfortable environment. This is because it is generally accepted that if the individual is unhappy with their surroundings they will be unable to get the most out of things. Some rehabs offer a very homely feel (they may even look like a normal house from the outside) while others offer very luxurious surroundings indeed.
  • Humans are strongly influenced by their environment, and these programmes offer the type of environment that fosters recovery. This means that the individual’s motivation can be magnified during their stay, and this greatly increases the chances of them being successful in recovery.
  • The individual who enters rehab will be making the choice to give their recovery the very best start. Just the act of doing this can make a real difference to the person’s chances of success. It shows that they are serious, and this message is sent loud and clear to the addictive part of their brain.
